Grilled Cheese Sandwich Ingredients
Bread -Really good bread, I prefer a sturdy sour dough with thicker than average slices
Bacon – Crispy bacon, it absolutely needs to be crispy otherwise you run the risk of yanking the whole rubbery slice out with your first bite. And that’s basically criminal.
Tomato – Thin sliced; if they’re too thick you’ll end up with a gloopy tomato seedy mess.
Cheese – American cheese, classic. Please don’t deviate.
Butter – the real stuff!
How Do You Make A Grilled Cheese Sandwich
First, generously slather butter on outside of bread.
Next, cover both (unbuttered) sides with cheese. Yep, both sides!
Then, on one slice place bacon, and on the other slice tomato. Carefully put slices together.
Finally, cook in skillet on medium heat, turning frequently until toasted the way you like it!
Preparing Grilled Cheese
Is Grilled Cheese Healthy
Grilled Cheese Sandwiches are not really considered healthy. Like many comfort foods, it tends to be high in calories, fat, and sodium. That being said, an occasional splurge may just be the comfort you need.
What Kind of Cheese for Grilled Cheese
What kind of cheese for a Grilled Cheese Sandwich really comes down to preference. I’ll admit it, I’m a purist (team American!), but some folks like cheddar, Colby, provolone, Monterey Jack, or other meltable cheeses.
Just a word of warning, the sharper your cheddar gets the less creamy and meltable it will be.
What Kind of Bread Makes the Best Grilled Cheese
The kind of bread for the best Grilled Cheese Sandwich should be one that can hold its own with the fillings. I like a good, thick sliced sourdough, but you could use French, Italian, or a good ciabatta as well.
Mixing it up can really add some flair to your Grilled Cheese Sandwich. How about a nice pumpernickel raisin?
Can You Reheat Grilled Cheese
You can reheat a Grilled Cheese Sandwich but heating up a pan on medium heat (not too high!) and adding a pat of butter. After placing the sandwich in, put a lid on the pan to keep the steam in. Cook for about 2-3 minutes per side or until cheese is melted.
Does Grilled Cheese Freeze Well
Yes, you can freeze a cooked, or uncooked, Grilled Cheese Sandwich. Leave the tomato out, and do not coat the outside of the bread with butter.
When you’re ready, you can pull the frozen sandwich and let it thaw, or prepare directly from the freezer. Butter both sides and grill on medium heat until toasty and melty, or use a panini press.
I can’t believe anyone would have leftover Grilled Cheese Sandwiches. But this might be a timesaver if you make up a ton of bacon and have made an extra loaf of bread that you’re not going to get to!
I would limit the amount of time the sandwich is in the freezer for best taste. 3 months max would be my estimate.
How Do You Make Grilled Cheese in the Microwave
To make a Grilled Cheese in the microwave, toast your bread first then put the fillings in. Wrap the sandwich in a paper towel, then microwave for 15-20 seconds, until cheese is melted. Please note, it is not going to be as good as one made on the stovetop.
You’re killing me, folks.
How Do You Make A Grilled Cheese in the Toaster
To make a Grilled Cheese Sandwich in a toaster, turn the toaster on it’s side and slide the two pieces of bread (butter on one side of each, cheese on the other). Butter side down so cheese side is not touching grills.
Keep a close eye to prevent the toaster popping it out when done to avoid having to clean up gooey cheese. And be careful, this really is not a great idea, but you asked.

Grilled Cheese Sandwich Making Tools
Santuko knife – My favorite knife for cutting vegetables! This knife is the perfect size and shape, handles great, and is super reasonably priced. Also, I just love that it’s fun and colorful!
End grain cutting board – This is my absolute favorite cutting board and the one that I get the most compliments on. And p.s. I have a lot of cutting boards. It really is absolutely stunning, and knows how to take a beating. We use it every single day!
Calphalon everyday pan – This is a 12″ two handled pan that you will use pretty much every day. Which, of course is why it’s called an everyday pan. I have this one and the Le Creuset version. I use a whole lot of pots and pans in my line of work (apologies to my husband, the dishwasher!) and these are by far my most frequently used pans.

April – you gotta try this –
I agree on all of the above EXCEPT for grilling your Grilled cheese using butter. not everyone has real butter –
I ALWAYs use Mayonnaise – REAL Mayonnaise. Spread it on BOTH sides of the bread, put on flat griddlel, brown ….turnover two sides add cheese, etc put the bottom grilled side of the other two pieces of bread on top of the bread with the cheeses. Flip to other side to brown evenly on both sides.
Sometimes the only thing I add with the cheese is a Spicy spread.

mayo is delicious too! i agree!
