Preparation
What is Salisbury steak?
Salisbury steak isn’t ACTUALLY a steak. It’s seasoned and pattied ground beef cooked in a homemade gravy, often made with mushrooms and onions.
The term came from Dr. James Henry Salisbury in the early 1800s who fed ground beef as a main course to Civil war soldiers and the name just stuck!
What is the best beef to use for Salisbury steak?
We like to use lean ground beef because there is less grease to deal with when making the gravy. If need be, drain any excessive grease from searing the burgers before adding the butter, mushrooms and gravy.
What type of bread crumbs work best for Salisbury steak?
We used store bought panko bread crumbs but you can also use homemade bread crumbs. Anything that will help the burgers stick together to stand up well in the gravy.
Storage and leftovers
How long does Salisbury steak last?
Save any leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days. Reheat in the oven, microwave or on the stovetop.
Can I freeze Salisbury steak?
Yes, you can freeze the patties in the gravy, stored in an airtight container in the freezer for up to 3 months. Thaw in the fridge and reheat in the microwave, oven or on the stovetop.
Tips and tricks
✅ Use a lean cut of ground beef to reduce the grease in the gravy.
✅ This dish can be made gluten free by using gluten free bread crumbs and gluten free flour. Always make sure to check your other ingredient labels as well.
✅ If you don’t care for mushrooms, you can leave them out.
✅ Make sure to use the same skillet for making the gravy as you did for searing the burgers. The flavor from the burgers will really add to the gravy!
Frequently asked questions
Can I use ground turkey or chicken instead of beef for Salisbury steak?
Yes, you can substitute ground turkey or chicken for the ground beef. Keep in mind that the flavor and texture might be slightly different.
What are some good substitutions for mushrooms?
If you’re not a fan of mushrooms, you can substitute them with other vegetables like bell peppers, zucchini, or even sliced carrots. These alternatives will still add texture and flavor to the dish.
What’s the best way to thicken the gravy if it’s too runny?
If the gravy is too runny, you can mix a small amount of cornstarch with water to create a slurry and add it to the gravy while it’s simmering. Stir continuously until the gravy reaches your desired thickness.
Is it possible to make Salisbury steak in a slow cooker?
Absolutely! After searing the patties, place them in a slow cooker. Prepare the gravy as directed, then pour it over the patties. Cook on low for 4-5 hours or on high for 2-3 hours.

This is easy meal to make during the week because it can be on the table in just 30 minutes! Make sure to serve this one with cafeteria noodles, baked rice, or air fryer potatoes. Also throw some roasted broccoli or creamed corn on the side!

The seasoned beef patties were so tender, and that homemade gravy with mushrooms and onions was to die for.
We got a quarter cow last summer and have a lot of ground beef to use up still but we’re tired of spaghetti! These turned out delicious, a good comforting dinner. I served over mashed potatoes.
This is a great classic that the whole family loves! It is a regular on our menu!
This turned out sooooo good. Thanks so much!
