Preparation
Can chocolate chip cookie bars be made ahead of time?
Yes, these can be made a day or two in advance. Store in an airtight container at room temperature until ready to serve.
What kind of chocolate chips to use?
This recipe calls for both milk chocolate chips and semisweet chocolate chips. These chocolate chip cookies bars are super chocolatey! If you wanted to use all semisweet chips to cut down on the sweetness, that’s fine. You can also use all milk chocolate chips if you like a really rich dessert!
How do I know when the chocolate chip cookie bars are done baking?
The cookie bars will be done baking when they start turning golden brown along the edges. Do not wait until the cookie is browned all over or it will be over baked.
Can you freeze chocolate chip cookie bar dough?
For sure! Wrap it tightly in plastic wrap, then place in a freezer bag or wrap again in foil. Freeze for up to six months, then thaw in the refrigerator before pressing into a pan for baking.
Alternatively, press into a parchment lined pan and freeze. Remove frozen dough from the pan and wrap as described above. Place pre-shaped dough in the pan when ready to bake.
Storage and leftovers
How long do chocolate chip cookie bars last?
Leftovers will keep 3 – 4 days when kept at room temperature, or up to a week in the refrigerator. For best results, store in an airtight container.
Can you freeze chocolate chip cookie bars?
Yes, they can be frozen before or after baking. See our preparation section above for details on freezing the dough.
To freeze baked cookie bars, allow them to cool first, then slice and store in a freezer safe air-tight container.
Can you bake the dough from frozen?
Yes! If you’ve frozen the dough spread into a pan or frozen pan-shaped dough, go ahead and cook from frozen. You’ll add about an extra ten minutes to the cook time, just pay attention to when they start to brown on the edges.
Tips and tricks
✅ Try different kinds of chips in your bars – like peanut butter chips, butterscotch chips, or even white chocolate.
✅ The perfect housewarming gift! Bring the dough frozen in the bottom of a new pan with directions on how to bake. Two gifts in one!
✅ We like these bars because they are super chocolatey! But if that isn’t your style, you can cut the chocolate chips in half and the cookie bars will still be fantastic!
✅ Make sure to grease the pan or use parchment paper when baking so the chocolate chips cookie bars do not stick to the pan.
